Physicochemical Characteristics and Properties of Produced Water Associated with Oil Production in the Sarir Field, Libya

This study investigates produced water associated with oil production in the Sarir Field, located in the Sirte Basin, Libya. It aims to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of produced water and to determine how these characteristics influence treatment options and the potential for safe reuse. Produced water is among the largest liquid waste streams generated by petroleum operations, occurring in substantial volumes that vary among wells and fields according to reservoir properties, geological formations, and formation-water composition.
The study examines selected physicochemical parameters, including specific gravity, salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), cation and anion concentrations, as well as selected volumetric and thermal properties, such as thermal compressibility, formation volume factor, and viscosity. The findings indicate noticeable variations among the investigated wells in several measured parameters, reflecting differences in the geological and chemical conditions of the associated water. The results also reveal elevated levels of salinity, total dissolved solids, and ionic constituents in comparison with typical seawater characteristics.
A comparison using Stiff diagrams showed similarities among certain wells and differences among others within the studied fields. The study emphasizes the need to apply appropriate treatment technologies before produced water is discharged or reused. Such treatment can minimize environmental impacts and, once the required treatment standards are achieved, enable produced water to be considered a potential resource for selected applications in accordance with applicable environmental guidelines.
